And.. why should we care about Shawn Mendes sexuality anyway? Frankly I'm not sure most grown ups care about what Shawn Mendes is exploring in his personal life .

After all, don't we already have Troye Sivan and a dozen other “up and coming” “out and proud” queer boys declaring themselves available for our consumption these days?

Its just that Shawn is an already established commodity, a mega pop star with billions of followers and fans around the globe, his “questioning his sexuality” has real potential impact on pop culture.

And if his recent chats about "taking space to explore his sexuality" in concert are any indication..Shawn (and his team) are floating a trial balloon to see just how much we are going to care.

The “Pin Up” Pop Star!

Keeping in mind that he has played a very smart game of keeping his younger female fan base interested since age 15, he is now 26, the shirtless pics, the “work out” video’s the cute flirty smiles, Shawn knows exactly who is buying the music and the concert tickets.

And what if he suddenly seemed to be playing for the other team? There is a real possibility that the girls might stop caring and move on.

That has real economic impact... and thats where the music business machinery starts to care about these kind of declarations!

Risk of Exposure.

So, there is a very real consequence of his declaring anything other than his availability for the female gaze.

However in this day and age with Chappell Roan’s special brand of lesbian girl power from the top of the charts..

Any pop star who seems to be hiding or masking their authentic selves start to look deceitful.. Or at least old fashioned and possibly uncomfortable with their true selves,

And that feels like a dated and old school approach to things.

And of course there is always that risk of somebody saying something that reveals the truth. Better to control the narrative and not end up looking hopelessly uncool. Right?

Pop Music Goes Fast

SO Shawn Mendes floating this kind of non-committal statement to his fan base is more than just a young guy trying to figure it all out.

It’s really and truly a question of business and economics and keeping up with the culture.

And you know we’ll be watching to see how his fans react and what it means for the momentum of his new releases!
